When winter starts to come, lots of people think they have to let their garden die and simply deal with the browns, grays, and occasional whites that come with winter. However, that’s not the case! Here are a few winter friendly plants that you can grow in your outdoor area to get all sorts of wonderful plant life!
Camellias
This flower grows in numerous different shades and colors and most varieties can grow fairly well in cold climates. There are some newer, cold climate hybrids that survive exceptionally well in the coldest of areas. Use camellias to add a touch of color to your winter garden.
Boxwood Hedge
Not only does this plant survive well in the winter, but it’s also famous for its use as a topiary. However, it does need sun to thrive well, so make sure it’s in an open, exposed area.
Brocolli
This may surprise you, but there are actually lots of vegetables that can survive quite well in the winter, broccoli being one of them. A few others are onions, spinach, and turnips. Do some research and you can have a winter veggie garden!
Cypress Topiary
The biggest concern about growing cypress topiary is to make sure you don’t overwater it. Drowning cypress can cause it to rot, ruining the roots and the whole plant. Put it somewhere where it gets lots of morning sun that will give the plant nutrients and evaporate any excess water.
Japanese Yew
This is an incredibly tough plant that won’t have a problem at all surviving in the winter. It’s very drought resistant and can make due with little sunlight. It looks great on porches or used to line fences or paths.
Snowdrops
If there’s any plant that was meant to survive in the winter, it’s the rightly named snowdrop. This plant not only looks stunning in any winter garden, but it can also survive cold temperatures and extended amounts of snowfall.
Holly
If you want to add some flare and color to the bleak winter landscape, then plant some holly bushes. The dots of red will brighten up your garden and make it look exceptional, especially if there’s snow!
Virginia Creeper
This is just one of the many berry bushes that you can plant that will survive during the winter. Not only does it survive, but it adds more color than just brown and white to your garden.
Brown’s Yew
This is a plant that doesn’t require much attention and can pretty much take care of itself. You will need to water it about twice a week and make sure it’s getting lots of sunlight, but other than that, it doesn’t need much else to survive in the cold.
Bergenia
This plant will for sure add all the color you want to your winter garden. Depending on the time of season, bergenia can be anything from purple to bronze to white. Make sure to keep it watered well and not dry out.
