Oftentimes, a well-planned path can take a backyard from good to great! However, it seems like lots of hours and money are needed in order to get the pathway you’re wanting. Instead of walking away from all that money, here are some pathway ideas that you can do yourself!
Wood Pallet
Not only is this a great idea that can tie your backyard together, but it also lets you repurpose all of your old garden pallets you just have sitting around! Tear those bad boys apart and place them out in your yard to get a great looking path!
Glow in the Dark
Why just have your path be seen during the daytime hours when it can glow all the time! Mix some glow in the dark powder into your cement mix to make stepping stones that shine even at night.
Tree Stumps
This is a great idea if you want to give your backyard as natural a feel as possible. Not only that, but it’s a great way to recycle stumps that may be discarded in your backyard. Nothing says creative like green and thrifty!
Black Stones
Here is a classy yet simple design for your backyard. These stones are a great eye-pleaser and simple way to tie your whole yard together. Surround them with red or complementary colored rocks in order to make your pathway pop!
Stone Stairs
If you’ve got a hilly backyard, no problem! Here’s a great idea to get that pathway you’ve always wanted. Although it requires some time and effort, these stairs will give you exactly what you want without having to break the bank.
Wood Squares
This idea is a little different from the rest because it usually requires a wider path, but it’s still a great choice. Form square frames with pieces of wood and then fill them with rocks or whatever you feel would make your backyard look its best.
Classic Brick
There’s nothing wrong with the classic brick pathway. Although it’s traditional, there are tons of ways you can make this path your own by changing up the pattern, border, and even direction it goes in.
Scattered Rocks
This design gives your backyard a rustic look that can be great if that’s the theme you’re going for in your yard. Some carefully and creatively placed stones can really take your backyard to the next level.
Single Stone
There’s no need to go all out with wide, expansive paths when all you need is a simple row! Save time and money by setting your stone in one line and then surrounding it with grass or gravel or whatever else fits your backyard.
Gravel
With some matching stone as a border, a gravel pathway can be a great choice for your backyard. If you have lots of tall shrubbery you want to get through, make a gravel pathway to give your backyard an adventurous feel!
Hedge
This takes a little more time and effort than some of the other designs, but it gives your backyard a sophisticated look that everyone is sure to love. Choose the right type of hedge and color of stone that will tie it all together.

How does one create a glow in the dark stone? It’s actually pretty fascinating that people are able to create things like that. My husband and I have been planning to put a pathway into our backyard, but we’ve been very busy. I’ll have to see if we can talk with a professional to help us plan a few more details.
