Some people think that, once the first day of fall hits, they’re gardening and outdoor activities are done for. While some things do come to a halt when the temperature drops, it’s not necessary to pack away all the gardening tools. Here are a few great plants for fall that can keep you out in the garden!
Cold-Resistant Plants
Obviously, you don’t want to plant anything in fall that is going to freeze and die in winter. However, there are a few cold-resistant plants that you can keep around in fall and not have to see die so soon. And it’s always nice to see a little color underneath the snow!
Cool-Season Veggies
Some vegetables don’t just survive in cool weather, they actually thrive! Some of the most common types are broccoli and Brussel sprouts. Plant them early enough so that they can grow before the ground freezes off too much.
Fast Growing Veggies
While not all vegetables can grow in the cold, there are quite a few plants that grow rather quickly so you can get them before the freezing cold sets in. Consider planting lettuce or other fast growing veggies around August to harvest quite a bit of them before winter comes.
Turf Grass
Turf grass is another great plant for fall and can keep the color in your lawn year-round. Depending on where you live, you may or may not need to fertilize the lawn to keep it healthy, so check on that and get going!
Spring Bulbs
The best time to plant and prepare spring bulbs is actually during the fall! The soil is still warm, which allows the bulbs to set their roots. Just make sure to keep pesky critters away so they don’t eat your bulbs!
Trees and Shrubs
If you’ve always wanted a tree in your front lawn or a some shrubs on the side of your home, you might as well get started in fall! Trees and shrubs, even when young, can usually survive cold weather without any issues.
Perennials
Fall is a great time to get your perennials in the ground or at least prepared for winter. If you already have perennials, then trim them back to avoid any overgrowth.
