Instead of investing in high-end chemicals that are probably as bad for the plants as they are the pests and animals you’re trying to keep out, use forks! Simply stick the plastic forks in the ground around your plants and animals will have a hard time snooping around.
This may not save you money upfront, but it will in the long run. Making a raised garden bed keeps animals at bay, stops water for pooling up in your garden and causing damage, and can even keep prying little kid hands away from newborn plants!
Use less soil and make your pots lighter by filling them first with foam peanuts. Simply put the foam peanuts in the pot and then add soil until it’s full! This adds a great drainage system as well and will keep your plants from being overwatered.
It’s really easy to lose quite a bit of soil over time when you water your potted plants. To help prevent this from happening, put a coffee filter at the bottom of the pot then fill it with soil. The filter stops soil from getting flushed out when the water drains.
You can also do the same thing with diapers! The diapers are super great, though, because they not only keep the soil in, but also retain moisture so your plant gets better taken care of.
Before you throw all your old seeds out, test them to see if they still work! You just have to moisten a towel, put a few of the seeds on it, and if they begin to sprout a while later, then you know the batch of seeds is still good!
Help save on water costs by making your very own rain barrel! Simply turn a garbage can into a DIY rain barrel that you can use to harvest rain water and water your plants with it!
If you need a watering can but don’t want to buy one, then here’s a great idea! Just take a milk jug, clean it out, poke holes in the lid, and then fill it with water. It’s now a DIY watering can!
Greenhouses are super effective and nice when growing plants, but they can be expensive and time-consuming to build. Instead, just use water bottles for individualized mini greenhouses! So clever!
It’s always nice to know what is growing where in your garden, especially when it’s just starting out. So, just paint some rocks and use them as label markers for your garden!
Use natural resources as the best tray for your seedlings and starters! You can take a lemon rind or egg shell and use it to start a plant! It’s super cheap and actually really effective.
Don’t go out and buy a bunch of vegetable starters and seeds if you don’t have to. You can actually use quite a few food scraps to grow all sorts of delicious food in your garden!
Use a wine bottle as an automatic watering device for your garden or potted plants. Simply fill the bottle with water and stick it upside down in the soil!
