Most casual and serious gardeners alike have an affinity for perennials. They come in all sorts of varieties, and you only have to plant them once to enjoy them every year. Bonus! If you’re looking for perennial plants and flowers that offer some “wow factor” with easy care, we’re about to give you 10. Grab your trowel and get ready to plant!
1. Salvia
Salvia are gorgeous — that’s the only way to say it. The tall, pointed flowers are versatile, and tough enough to make it through most cold winters. And yet, they’ll love the summer heat as well. Salvia looks great in small bundles or large patches.
2. Coreopsis
If you need a little yellow in your garden, Coreposis offers a daisy-like structure with a pop of color. They grow to about 18″ tall. Remove fading flowers and you’ll extend their blooming time all summer long.
3. Seedum
Seedum comes in many varieties, from deep greens to vibrant colors. This succulent can make a nice ground cover, as it only grows a few inches tall. They’re very tolerant of hot, dry climates.
4. Peony
Who doesn’t love this delicate flower with large blooms? Peonies could be called the workhorse of your garden, as they’ll come back for many years with very little help from you. They grow about 3 feet tall and come in a wide range of colors.
5. Purple Coneflower
This popular perennial grows about 2.5 feet tall, and features lavender blooms that last a long time. Purple Coneflower attracts butterflies and hummingbirds, and grows in sun or partial shade in dry conditions.
6. Bearded Iris
Bearded Iris are known for their unique shape and heavenly scents. They may be one of the first flowers in your garden to bloom every year. They are drought tolerant and come in a virtually unlimited number of colors.
7. Lily
The most popular types of lilies are Asiatic or Oriental. They grow 3-4 feet tall and produce large, fragrant blooms in orange, red, white, yellow, or bi-colors. They’ll thrive in zones 3-8.
8. Black-Eyed Susan
This lovely perennial is easy to grow and blooms from early summer through fall. They’re naturally drought tolerant and insect resistant. Black-eyed Susan will grow where you plant it for a few years, but may also self-sow to other nearby spots. Keep an eye out for seedlings and then transplant them wherever you like.
9. Daylily
Daylilies are similar in shape to lilies, but smaller. They can be prolific bloomers, especially if you buy the ever-blooming variety. They’re winter-hardy in zones 3-9, so they’re very versatile. Full sun is best.
10. Hosta
Hostas provide lush, green foliage and are ideal for a low-maintenance garden. There is a wide variety available, which grow well under different sunlight conditions. Generally, the lighter the foliage, the brighter the location should be. Deeper colors will usually do better in moderate shade, and very few will thrive in direct sunlight. They’ll tolerate most soil conditions and come back for many years.
