Did you know that this is a hydrangea? Are you confused about its placement in this list? Well, don’t be. The newest Hydrangea plants are meant to provide a show of color across more than one season, and Little Lime hydrangea is one of those. It begins blooming mid-summer, with beautiful lime-green flowers. The lime-green flowers gradually turn light pink, which turns to a cinnamon color during fall. It tops out around 5′ tall, and is hardy in zones 3-9. It requires at least part sun. Keep the ground moist to ensure that the color-changing flowers stick around into the winter months.
Could there be a more perfect name for a fall shrub than Brandywine? I don’t think so! The name truly evokes the colors of the beautiful, glossy foliage as it turns a deep maroon every fall. It too is a multi-season stunner, with pretty white flowers in spring that turn into pink and blue berries come fall. Right about now I’m wondering why I don’t have one in my yard! Time to rectify that!
Burning Bush is another fall shrub with a name befitting its color. In the fall, this low-maintenance, pest-resistant dark green shrub turns a flaming red. The Fire Ball variety is the smallest and will grow to be a more adaptable and malleable 7-feet tall. Burning Bush is hardy in zones 4-8. Make sure to plant it in full sun to maximize its beautiful fall color!
Viburnum is a different sort of shrub with fall impact. During spring, large lacy flowers cover the plant. By late summer it is covered in bright red berries that provide interest through fall. This shrub is deer-resistant and also attracts butterflies. It is suitable for zones 4-8 and perfect for hedges. Pleas note that the berries are attractive to wildlife, but are not suitable for human consumption.
