Nothing enhances the backyard experience like a beautiful, shady tree. And hey, on those hot summer days, you can still enjoy being outside with out getting sunburned or sweating to death (lemonade recommended!) With summer just around the corner, here are some great ideas for shade trees that will help you enjoy those “dog days.”
1. Oak
Oak trees get big and beautiful, so they’re best for a larger yard where there’s room to spread. They can reach 70-80 feet tall and 80 feet wide!
2. Maple
Maple trees provide amazing shade in the summer, but also gorgeous color in the fall. Not quite as large as an oak tree, maples reach 40-60 feet tall and 20-40 feet wide.
3. Weeping Willow
These beautiful trees have a unique look and provide superior shade. They grow fast, to a mature size of 40-50 feet tall and 35 feet wide.
4. Superior Hybrid Poplar
This is a common shade tree that grows as much as 8 feet every year, until it gets about 30 feet wide and 40-50 feet tall. They also have a very pleasing oval shape.
5. Tulip
As opposed to the lovely spring flower, the tulip tree is both ornamental AND shady. They reach a mature size of up to 90 feet tall and 40 feet wide. Big and beautiful!
6. Silver Maple
Silver maple is a great shade tree with great size for a big backyard. Its spreading canopy gets up to 50 feet wide and up to 80 feet tall.
