You gotta love perennials. They’re the “set it and forget it” of gardening. Plant them one year, and you’ll be able to enjoy them for many years to come, just like clockwork. Got a sunny garden spot that needs some color? Don’t want to re-plant your flowers every year? Try these 10 perennial flowers that love the sun. They’ll add gorgeous hues every summer without all the work.
1. Beardtongue
The flower with the strangest name sometimes has the prettiest blooms. In zones 5 to 9, beardtongue is known for tubular blossoms and talk stalks. Once established, they don’t need a lot of water.
2. Delphinium
These gorgeous blue cone-shaped perennials are sure to add the wow factor. Delphinium does well in zones 3 to 9 and attracts butterflies.
3. Coneflowers
Similar to and often mistaken for daisies, coneflowers have that signature ball-shaped center and petals that hang just slightly downward. They work well in zones 3 to 9, and are fairly drought tolerant.
4. Dianthus
If you like pink, you’ll love dianthus. These carnation-like blooms are perennials in zones 5 to 10, and come in several different varieties. Check your zone to make sure they’ll be winter-hardy for you.
5. Coreopsis
These make lovely cut flowers, and bring a bright orange-yellow color to any garden in zones 4 to 9. Once established, coreopsis needs low to average watering.
6. Daylily
Daylilies are real head-turners for any garden, and are available in several different varieties and colors. They’re hardy, too, most varieties being perennials in zones 2-9.
7. Butterfly Bush
If you love butterflies in your garden, try a butterfly bush or two. Appropriate for zones 5-9, these will give you blooms the first year you plant them. Only a little care is necessary.
8. Clematis
Clematis come in several different types, each with a different color show. The climbing blooms can last from early summer until fall, in grow zones 4 to 9.
9. Hibiscus
Hibiscus is an herbaceous perennial featuring large blooms in several different shades. They can even be made into extracts or teas. They do well in zones 4 to 9, but need frequent watering.
10. Phlox
If petite blooms are your thing, check out phlox. Like other perennials, they come in many stunning varieties. You can enjoy your phlox from the middle of summer until fall, in zones 4 to 8.
