Is this what your garden looks like during the winter? Mine too! But thankfully, you don’t have to resort to eating bland grocery store tomatoes. Tomatoes are just one of the vegetables to grow in winter–indoors–while the snow drifts pile up outside. Let me show you some of the delicious vegetables you can grow inside the house all winter long!
Vegetables To Grow In Winter {As Long As They’re Indoors}
If you’ve already read up on my cold frame gardening post, then you know that there are several different types of cold weather crops that you can grow outdoors in the winter–as long as they’re inside a cold frame. This post is a bit different. The vegetables you can grow indoors during the winter are typically warm weather crops that don’t do well in a cold frame. If you try both cold frame and indoor gardening, you can enjoy both cold weather and warm weather crops year-round.
If you’ve got a sunny shelf in your kitchen, a heated garden shed or even a basement equipped with LED grow lights, you can grow some delicious vegetables indoors. Here are the vegetables to grow indoors when it’s too cold outside for gardening.
Tomatoes
You probably are aware that you can start seedlings indoors and then transplant them to your garden outside after the frost danger is over. But to grow tomatoes in winter just start them indoors as soon as you put the garden beds up for fall. Your best bet for indoor tomatoes are smaller varieties, such as cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes or Roma tomatoes. Larger varieties have more light and space requirements than a spot indoors can fulfill.
Carrots
Surprise! Many gardeners are shocked to find out that carrots grow well indoors. The catch is that you must use a large, deep bucket or pot with plenty of room for the carrots to grow down. Make sure you use a loose, organic growing medium and plenty of light. Under these conditions you can grow some delicious mini or full-size carrots even in the gray days of January and February!
Potatoes
Choose a baby red variety and plant in a large bucket to enjoy fresh potatoes indoors during the winter. Within just a few square feet, it’s possible to produce severak pounds of fresh potatoes to enjoy.
Onions & Garlic
These two can share a space, and they’ll grow happily together inside. Onions and garlic may do best in a cooler spot inside your home, and will even tolerate a cool basement or garden shed.
Other Vegetables To Grow In Winter {As Long As They’re Indoors}
Other vegetables to grow in winter include peppers, beets, cauliflower, broccoli, lettuce and spinach, plus several varieties of herbs. Your kitchen window is the perfect spot for a small indoor herb garden!
