Health Benefits Of Common Herbs

Rosemary not only smells divine and tastes delicious on grilled meats, it also helps alleviate nasal congestion and allergic response. The active compound in rosemary is rosmarinic acid. Rosmarinic acid has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties, which helps suppress your body’s allergic response to things such as grasses and weeds.

Garlic is an herb, and you can grow it outside in your garden or inside in pots. The beneficial compound in garlic is allicin. Allicin fights illnesses such as the common cold. It also is shown to improve your cardiovascular health. Studies show that allicin lowers cholesterol and high blood pressure.

Many studies have shown that Fenugreek, eaten daily, improves blood sugar levels in diabetics.

Holy Basil, not to be confused with regular basil, is a sacred herb in India. It improves immune function and helps the body fight infections. 

If you suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome, consider growing your own Peppermint. Peppermint is known especially for the oil in the leaves. Peppermint tea, made from the leaves of the plant, relieves nausea, bloating, and pain from constipation.

Sage has recently been shown to improve brain function and memory for people living with Alzheimer’s. During the Middle Ages, sage was touted for its healing properties. It was even used to prevent the plague.

Lavender is shown to ease anxiety. You can achieve the effect by ingestion or by inhaling the calming scent. Lavender also helps treat fungal infections and hair loss. The oil from lavender has anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties, and can be used to help heal mosquito and bug bites.
