Fragrant flowering plants are one way to make your home garden even better. Do you love the fresh scent of lilacs in the breeze when you step outside in spring? Fortunately, you can have pretty scents in your garden for much longer than that. Just plant a variety of fragrant flowering plants in your yard for you and your neighbors to enjoy. Here are some of my favorites!

This is the Fringe tree, so named for its light, fringey-looking flowers that are soft and ethereal. The buttery yellow blooms aren’t just lovely to look at, they also smell amazing. The Fringe tree attracts birds, who also love to enjoy it. If you plant Fringe tree, know that it needs full sun and regular watering. When it’s hot outside, water this tree deeply about once a week.

The Flowering Plum boasts these gorgeous pink and white blooms that scent the air all around. This is a small-to-medium sized ornamental tree native to Asia. The ornamental Flowering Plum is specifically bred to be non fruit-bearing, but some do still produce small fruits. The fruit is edible, but is usually of poor quality so most people just toss it. Flowering Plum needs full sunlight to reach its best potential in both size and coloring.

An Acacia shrub is known for the sunny yellow blooms that cover it. The foliage is blueish-green, and the scent is the cherry on top! If you live in a drier climate, the acacia shrub is perfect because it is also drought-tolerant. Acacia gardeners love to cut some of the branches during bloom time and take them indoors to enjoy their heavenly scent.

I have a Butterfly bush in my yard, and it’s a real show-stopper. Not only does it bloom in long cone-shaped purple flowers, but the flowers smell pretty and attract tons of butterflies {and hummingbirds too!}. It really is a fragrant flowering plant everyone ought to grow.

This is a Mexican Orange shrub, and if you aren’t familiar with it you’re missing out. Also known as Mexican Orange Blossom, this is an evergreen shrub with blooms that resemble those of an orange tree. It has a scent to match! With its small size, Mexican Orange is perfect for smaller spots next to your foundation or in a border garden.
