Plant parenting isn’t something you just do on the fly–it does take some knowledge and planning. If you want to have the best plants on the block, you need to know these plant care tips. Armed with the best plant care tips, you’re sure to excel at this plant parenting gig. Stick around and check out what you need to do to care for your plants!

Light Matters

Before you go out and start plant parenting, know the levels of natural light that reach into each room of your home. This is important! If you purchase houseplants that need lots of direct sunlight, but you’ve got an abundance of indirect light, those plants won’t be as happy as they should be. And plants that aren’t happy don’t grow well. So take the light into account before you acquire the plants.

Time Considerations

What type of lifestyle do you lead? Are you a homebody? Or are you constantly traveling for business or pleasure? These things matter in plant parenting. Plant care tips that don’t point this out are doing you {and your plants} a disservice. Some plants, such as ferns, are finicky and need more care and attention than others. If you’re gone a lot, consider low-maintenance types such as succulents or air plants. They’ll be fine for extended periods without fuss.

Dusty Leaves Can’t Breathe

It’s true–your plants like to breathe just as much as you do. The leaves are like the lungs of the plant. When they get coated with dust, oxygen transfer is inhibited and plant growth is too. Make sure you give your plants a bath when they get dusty. They’ll thank you for it!

Under-watering is Better than Over-watering

If you’re not sure how much water any particular plant likes, definitely err on the side of under-watering. Overwatering can lead to problems such as root rot or pest infestations. So don’t keep the soil soggy. Let it dry out between waterings unless the plant directions say otherwise. If the soil appears nice and dark, is cool and moist, and sticks to a finger, there’s enough water there for another day or two.

Thoughts on Temperature

Keep your plants away from drafts and heat vents. They don’t like the fluctuations in temperature. Plant care tips require a spot where the temperature stays relatively stable.

These plant care tips will help you rock plant parenting!
